What is electrical wiring?
It is the system of devices and cables used to conduct electrical power in a residential, commercial, or industrial building or property. It comprises the cables and wires running through ceilings and walls, as well as the electrical components such as switches, outlets, and other parts that regulate the movement of electricity.
The importance of suitable and proper wiring is for ensuring the efficiency and safety of any electrical system and is typically carried out by a licensed electrician with knowledge of electrical regulations, standards, and codes. Old electrical wiring connections may lead to problems like electric shocks and short circuits or may lead to damage to devices and appliances.
Types of Electrical Wiring for Residential Properties
Conduit wiring
- A procedure where running electrical wires through a protective tube or pipe is called conduit wiring. The conduit shields the wirings from physical damage and gives extra mechanical support making it a perfect choice for places where the significant danger of moisture or other environmental dangers is present.
Batten wiring
- In this design of wiring, fasteners or clips are used to lock the running wires over the batten's surface. They are then coated on the batten with a finish, like wallpaper or paint, to hide it. It isn't commonly used and doesn't comply with recent safety codes and regulations. Its recommended to replace it with other types of wiring systems because of safety measures.
Lead sheathed wiring
- For this wiring method, the electrical conductor is protected with Vulcanized Indian Rubber and then it is enclosed with a sheath of Lead-Aluminum alloy (5% Aluminum and 95% Lead. Making it corrosion and moisture resistance.
Cleat wiring
- This method uses Plastic, Wood, or Porcelain cleats secured to ceilings or walls at regular intervals between each cleat. PVC insulated cables are taken through the holes of each cleat, and hence the cleat supports and holds the wire. It is a low-cost system of wiring and is used for impermanent connections. Thus, it is not appropriate for home wiring.
Practices to avoid
- If there’s no box present, make sure to add one and connect the wires inside it. Don’t connect wires outside of electrical junction boxes.
- Make sure to avoid switches and outlets that are loose.
- Don’t install a three-slot receptacle when there is no ground wire.
- Don’t cut your wires too short. By any chance you do, always remember to add 6 inches’ extensions.
