What is an Electric Pump

An electric pump is a machine that transforms electrical energy into mechanical energy using an electric motor to transfer fluids or gasses. These pumps have different uses, including pumping fuel in petrol stations, moving water in household and commercial settings, and powering hydraulic systems. Centrifugal pumps, positive displacement pumps, and submersible pumps are a few of the several kinds of electrical pumps.

How Does an Electric Pump Works

An electric motor is used to power the mechanical component, like a rotor or impeller, in an electric pump. This mechanical component causes movement in the liquid or gas. The fluid or gas is transferred via a network of pipelines or channels using the mechanical energy that was once electrical energy from the motor.

Common Types of an Electric Pump

1. Centrifugal Pumps

It uses an impeller to increase fluid velocity allowing lower pressure at the outlet point. It is always present in agricultural and industrial settings.

2. Positive Displacement Pumps

It has a fixed-volume chamber and a mechanical component that moves the fluid. Commonly used in the oil and food industry.

3. Submersible Pumps

It is submerged in the fluid that needs pumping. Commonly used in sewage plants, wells, and flood control systems.

4. Magnetic Drive Pumps

It uses magnetic coupling to move power from the motor to the impeller.

5. Screw Pumps

Commonly present in high-flow rate and low-pressure settings such as food industries.

6. Peristaltic Pumps

It produces suction by compressing a tube with a roller or shoe, which moves the fluid.

7. Diaphragm Pumps

It creates suction and moves the fluid using a flexible diaphragm.

8. Gear Pumps

It uses a gear to move the fluid.

Parts of a Standard Electric Pump

1. Electric Motor

It provides power to move the mechanical components of the pump.

2. Rotor or Impeller

It serves as a component to generate movement in the gas or fluid.

3. Coupling

It connects the pump and motor.

4. Bearings

It aligns and supports the shaft to make it rotate smoothly.

5. Suction and Discharge point

The suction point is where the gas or fluid enters, and the Discharge point is where the gas or fluid exits.

6. Shaft

It prevents fluid from leaking and avoid contaminants from entering the pump.

7. Base plate

It is used to mount the motor and pump together

8. Casing

It encloses the rotor and impeller. It also serves as a guide for the flow of gas or liquid through the pump.

9. Control Panel

Controls the pump and motor.

Common Issues of Electric Pumps

Here are some common issues that electric pumps encounter.

  1. Gas or air in the pump
  2. Leakage
  3. Corrosion
  4. Blockage
  5. Worn-out seal
  6. Mechanical failure
  7. Lack of power
  8. Motor burnout
